About Mule Deer Foundation

Championing Wildlife Conservation for Over Three Decades

The mission of the Mule Deer Foundation is to ensure the conservation of mule deer, black-tailed deer and their habitat.

Promise

The Mule Deer Foundation is the only conservation group in North America dedicated to restoring, improving, and protecting mule deer and black-tailed deer and their habitat, with a focus on science and program efficiency. Our conservation programs combined with our grassroots support are the foundation of who we are as an organization.

Our vision is to unite deer, people, landscapes for the betterment of habitat, communities and our way of life.

Role in public access

Our conservation efforts are delivered through efforts by MDF staff and in partnership with state and federal agencies as well as other non-profit organizations.

MDF is also a strong voice for public access, wildlife management, and conservation policy issues. We support regulated hunting as a viable component to wildlife management and we are committed to mentoring the next generation of sportsmen and women into the traditions of hunting, shooting sports, and conservation.

MDF is dedicated to the following goals:

Sustaining Mule Deer Populations

o restore, improve, and protect mule deer habitat (including land and easement acquisitions) resulting in self-sustaining, healthy, free ranging, and huntable deer populations.

Partnering for Wildlife Management

To encourage and support responsible wildlife management with government agencies, private organizations, and landowners.

Advancing Mule Deer Research and Awareness

To promote public education and scientific research related to mule deer and wildlife management.

Advocating for Mule Deer Welfare

To support and encourage responsible and ethical behavior and awareness of issues among those whose actions affect mule deer.

Connected by Conservation

Connected by Conservation represents a meticulously crafted strategy by the Mule Deer Foundation, focused on the pivotal conservation of mule deer, black-tailed deer, and their habitats. This initiative is a testament to the symbiotic relationship between wildlife populations, their natural environments, and the human communities that share these spaces.

MDF is set to spotlight four pivotal narratives under the CBC initiative:

  • Connecting People: Fostering a community united by a shared commitment to conservation.
  • Connecting Landscapes: Ensuring the continuity and health of ecosystems through strategic conservation efforts.
  • Connecting Herds: Safeguarding the genetic diversity and vitality of wildlife populations.
  • Connecting to the Wild: Encouraging deeper engagement and appreciation for the natural world.
Science Driven
How MDF is different

Connected by Conservation

Our initiative, Connected by Conservation, embodies our holistic approach to conservation.

It emphasizes the interconnectedness of all elements within an ecosystem and the vital role that each individual plays in the broader conservation effort. By prioritizing science, we ensure that our projects not only benefit mule deer but also contribute to the health and balance of entire ecosystems."

Priority Herds, Priority Landscapes Program

Our Priority Herds, Priority Landscapes program is a prime example of our science-driven focus. This program identifies key mule deer herds and critical landscapes that require immediate attention.

Through extensive research and monitoring, we pinpoint specific areas where conservation efforts will have the greatest impact."
